From August 6-11, 2023, fifteen young people from Japan, Korea, and the United States gathered in Washington for the capstone component of the Trilateral Youth Empowerment Program, a part of the Maureen Mansfield Women’s Empowerment Series.
The program aims to build more inclusive democracies in Japan, the Republic of Korea (ROK), and the United States (U.S.). by amplifying youth voices in the policy decision-making process, and empowering young women from these three countries to take a more active role in politics. The program provides a space for college-age women (ages 18-24) to develop their skills and ideas by working with their peers and established experts on current public policy challenges.
Over the course of a week, participants met with policymakers in DC, refined policy proposals they have developed for the past year, and held a public event in the U.S. Capitol to discuss the issue areas of most importance to them.
These policy proposals will be compiled by the Mansfield Foundation and distributed to audiences in the three countries later this year.
