Mansfield-Luce Asia Scholars Network Application Instructions

The application must be completed and mailed or emailed to the Mansfield Foundation by Sunday, October 1, 2023 (11:59 p.m. ET). All attachments and references must also be submitted by this time. Please submit all application materials either via email to applications@mansfieldfdn.org

Please note with the deadline extension, the Cohort 3 program schedule will be as follows:
— November 2023: a two-day policy workshop in Washington, DC, for select scholars
— April or May 2024: a long weekend retreat in Montana
— June or July 2024: a two-week study trip to Asia
— October or November 2024: a publication launch event in Washington, DC

Eligibility and Terms

  • Applicants must possess a PhD or equivalent degree/experience with expertise in Southeast or Northeast Asia studies.
  • Applicants must be able to make a one-year commitment to the program and should be prepared to participate in all meetings and study trips, including:
    • a two-day policy workshop in Washington, DC for select scholars (November 2023);
    • a long weekend retreat in Montana (April or May 2024);
    • a two-week study trip to Asia (June or July 2024); and
    • a publication launch event in Washington, DC (October or November 2024).
  • Participants will be expected to research and draft a concise policy paper on a topic of their choosing relevant to U.S.-Asia relations. These papers will be submitted to the Foundation and edited into a publication for dissemination at the end of the one-year period. Beyond these requirements, participants will be encouraged to produce policy commentaries on important policy issues in U.S.-Asia relations.
  • The program will cover the costs of travel, accommodations, and meals associated with project meetings and study trips.

Part II – Attachments

Along with your Part I application, please email the following attachments:

  • A personal statement describing your area of expertise, reason for wanting to participate in the Mansfield-Luce Asia Scholars Network, and how participation in this program will serve you in the future (12-point, Times New Roman, 1-inch normal margin, single-spaced, 500 words or less).
  • A research prospectus that you wish to focus on for the policy brief that will be published and disseminated at the end of the program. The prospectus may be changed during the course of the program (12-point, Times New Roman, 1-inch normal margin, single-spaced, 1-2 page).
  • A detailed educational and professional resume that describes any experience in the area of international policy, U.S.-Asia relations, and any awards, publications, or public presentations.
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or permanent residency in the U.S.
  • Two professional letters of reference (letters and forms must be submitted no later than 5:00 p.m. (ET) on August 28, 2023.
