On Tuesday, August 25th, Mansfield Foundation President & CEO Frank Jannuzi was joined by Dr. Jennifer Lind of Dartmouth College and Dr. Jeffrey Hornung of the RAND Corporation for a discussion on Japan’s role in the rising U.S.-China rivalry. Dr. Lind’s provided an excellent overview of Japan’s strategic interests and regional identity vis-à-vis its relationships with its neighbors, while Dr. Hornung delved deeply into China’s maritime brinksmanship in the South China Sea and the Japanese response. The event ended with a lively Q&A session, wherein we delved into the influence of war memory on international policy and the value of knowing not only what you think of your allies, but also what your allies think of you.
