On May 6th and 7th, a majority of working group members convened in Washington, D.C. for a series of meetings with key stakeholders in the Washington, D.C. nuclear and energy policy communities.  During the meetings, NWG members distributed copies of the English language version of their report, outlining their core conclusions for meeting discussants.  Group members then engaged discussants in informal conversation based on their findings, in turn hearing reactions and perspectives from the discussants. The meetings comprised four closed-door roundtable conversations: a Safety, Security & Nonproliferation Roundtable; a U.S. Department of Energy Roundtable, a Foreign Policy Roundtable, and a Private Sector Roundtable.  The meeting concluded with an expert’s roundtable at the Council on Foreign Relations.

The following autumn, several members of the U.S.-Japan Nuclear Working Group engaged in a similar outreach session in Japan, distributing a Japanese translation of the group’s publication.  Group members held meetings over two days in Tokyo with officials from the NRA, Kantei, MOFA, and the Japanese Diet.  The outreach effort also included an Experts’ Roundtable event at the Japan Center for International Exchange, and public seminars in Fukuoka, Osaka, and Tokyo.  Dr. Kiyoshi Kurokawa and Dr. Toshiya Hoshino participated as guest commentators during the Osaka seminar; Ambassador Iichiro Fujisaki participated as a commentator in the Tokyo seminar.  In order to more fully understand the situation in Japan, and to deepen delegation members’ understandings of nuclear power, the group also travelled to Fukushima prefecture to tour the Fukushima Daiichi site. The delegation, including Dr. Akiyama, Mr. Cossa, Dr. Ferguson, Mr. Flake, Mr. Hansen, Ms. Squassoni, and Mr. Tanaka, reflected a range of the full group’s varied views and assumptions on the topic of nuclear energy—these differences were demonstrated to private and public audiences in order to illustrate the broad range of views that have yielded the group’s consensus recommendations.
