Unique Experiences, Unique Perspectives: Mansfield Fellows and Their Insights on U.S.-Japan Relations

March 13, 2013

On March 12, 2013, the Mansfield Foundation released a new publication highlighting many of the ways the Mike Mansfield Fellowship Program has provided Fellows with unique insights into the Japanese government’s policymaking process as well as opportunities to improve coordination between the United States and Japan. Unique Experiences, Unique Perspectives: Mansfield Fellows and Their Insights on U.S.-Japan Relations was initiated to commemorate the selection of the one-hundredth Mansfield Fellow to enter the program since its establishment by the U.S. Congress in 1994.

The publication is a compendium of essays written by twenty-eight alumni of the Mike Mansfield Fellowship Program. The Fellowship Program has enriched U.S.-Japan understanding and cooperation in many different fields, and this diversity is reflected in the essays compiled in the publication, which includes sections on “Finance, Trade and Development,” “National Security and Politics,” “Transportation and Disaster Preparedness” and “Telecommunications, Environment/Energy and Health.” Each essay details the unique experience of the Fellow who wrote it while providing insights and perspectives on Japan, the United States, and the U.S.-Japan relationship. Also included are essays written by Japan’s current Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Yoshimasa Hayashi, who conceived the idea of the Fellowship Program during his studies in the United States; Daniel Bob (Sasakawa Peace Foundation), who worked with Mr. Hayashi to draft the legislation creating the program; and Paige Cottingham-Streater (Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission) who launched and implemented the program as its director from 1995-2011.  Their essays reflect on the origins and early years of the Mansfield Fellowship Program as well as its ongoing role in maintaining a close U.S.-Japan partnership.

The Mansfield Foundation is grateful to the Toshiba International Foundation and Fast Retailing Co., Ltd. for their generous support of this project.
