Ryan Shaffer is a Program Associate at the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation. His primary responsibility is managing many of the Foundation's Japan programs, including the new Mansfield Committee on U.S.-Japan Relations and exchanges for Diet members and Japanese economists, as well as energy and environment and other policy dialogues. He also oversees the Mansfield Asian Opinion Poll Database and directs the Foundation’s internship program.
Prior to joining the Mansfield Foundation, Mr. Shaffer served as a research analyst for the Washington office of the Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan. In that position, his responsibilities included helping represent Japan’s nuclear program to U.S. policymakers and others and analyzing developments in U.S. policy on energy, nonproliferation, and Japan. Mr. Shaffer worked in Japan for two years as an English language specialist for the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program. He speaks Japanese and some Mandarin Chinese.
Mr. Shaffer has an MS in Asian politics from the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies and a BS in environmental policy from Bates College. He is a member of the academic honor society Phi Beta Kappa.
